QLD Police visit Boronia Childcare Centre at Nathan to familiarise children with police

Acting Sergeant Sherry Ho and Volunteer in Policing Bill Jeffs visited the Boronia Childcare Centre at Nathan recently to familarise children with the role the police play in the community, and to remove misconceptions about their role. 

 

Unfortunately, a police spokesperson said, some adults will say “if you are naughty, police will come and take you away!” or something similar to a child.

 

Many of the children know about the police from their parents or caregivers, from seeing police cars on the road or seeing uniformed officers out in public, and were particularly curious about what items police carry with them.

 

The special visitors talked about how police have different kinds of jobs, like general duties officers who they are most likely going to see, Dog Squad Officers, the Mounted Unit on their horses and more.

 

Mr Jeffs showed how an unmarked police car can be easily hidden among regular traffic. Even though this car looks like a regular car, it still has the lights and sirens to use when needed. The children were very excited to see the lights flashing in the windscreen, very different to the normal marked police cars.

 

The visitors talked about the importance of wearing a correctly fitting helmet when they’re on their bike or scooter, before encouraging the children to give them a smile and a wave when they see them in the community.
