Corrimal Community Centre creates collaborative mosaic with children
A series of art workshops held at Corrimal Community Centre recently inspired a bespoke clay mosaic artwork, which is proudly displayed in the courtyard of the Corrimal Library and Community Centre, all arranged through early childhood education and care (ECEC) provider, Big Fat Smile.
The artwork is an example of connections with community, an integral part of the National Quality Framework, and is shared to support the growth and learning of others in the ECEC sector.
Members of the community of all ages reimagined their favourite childhood stories, including children who painted representations from books including Piranhas don’t eat bananas, How to Train Your Dragon and Harry Potter.
Big Fat Smile, in conjunction with two talented local artists from the local community, Emma Morris and Rhiannon Gill, ran the workshops, working together to install the mosaic tiles created by the community. The completed tiles were then arranged in the shape of a tree, signifying the growth of Corrimal with its branches representing diversity, and being part of the surrounding local community.
The art installation, unveiled on 22 November, is titled “Your Words Grow With Me’ and has encouraged the community to “discuss and share ideas, to create a vibrant public art installation within a community precinct, and to connect and inspire individuals within the community,” a statement from Big Fat Smile said.
The project coordinated by Big Fat Smile was funded by a Wards-based Community Arts Grant from Wollongong City Council.
