Expanded access to preschool for Koori children in the ACT

The Australian Capital Territory will provide greater access to preschool for Koori children, with an expanded number of sessions available from the start of 2024 at three of the Territory’s five Koori Preschools. 

Koori Preschools offer a play-based, culturally safe learning program for children aged three to five years. Eligible children can attend 15 hours of Koori Preschool per week in addition to being enrolled in their local preschool.

This expansion, ACT Early Childhood Development Minister Yvette Berry said, is part of delivering on the Government’s commitment outlined in the Set up for Success: An Early Childhood Strategy for the ACT to provide up to an additional 100 places for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander three year old children at Koori Preschool.

The announcement comes at a time of growth for the early learning sector in the ACT, with all three-year-old children to have access to one day per week free preschool in early childhood education and care centres in 2024.

The extra Koori Preschool sessions will be available at Ngunnawal Primary School, Narrabundah Early Childhood School and Richardson Primary School.

Parents and carers can enrol Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children in Koori Preschool at any time between the ages of three and five years.
