Scholarship recipient Anita makes the move from banking to ECEC

Early Childhood Teacher (ECT) Anita Kennedy made a career move from banking to early childhood education and care (ECEC) in 2009 after having her third child, and recently shared her story with the New South Wales Department of Education.  

“Since commencing in the sector, I have seen so many positive changes with improved policy and procedures, the introduction of the EYLF, learning stories, online apps, more inclusiveness and improved training,” she shared.

“I’ve really enhanced my understanding of a child’s learning and development, both through my personal experience as a mother, but also through my studies and work.”

Ms Kennedy had support in her studies through a NSW Government Early Childhood Education Scholarship, graduating with a Bachelor of Early Childhood Education & Care (Birth to Five Years), earlier this month through TAFE NSW.

Having access to the scholarship Anita said the scholarship has been a significant financial help, as it assisted with paying her course fees.

“It did feel daunting to undertake additional study, however receiving the scholarship and now having finished my degree shows that once you put your mind to it, it really is achievable!”

Choosing TAFE was a logical extension of her Certificate III and Diploma studies which were also undertaken with the provider, who she praised for “the wonderful and flexible study environment they offered”.

Currently working at Warragamba Preschool Inc on Dharug country, Ms Kennedy is passionate about working with young children, in particular supporting the learning, growth and development of children with additional needs.

Throughout all three qualifications, she has increased her skills and knowledge including in child-directed learning to focus on the child’s strengths, interests and abilities.

“I have a real passion for working with children who have many diverse abilities and love making a difference in their lives, and I find it rewarding to see the children reach milestones no matter how big or small,” she shared. 

“Through my work I have learnt how important early intervention is and the need to collaborate with families and other professionals for the benefit of the child – this can make transition to school a smoother experience for everyone involved.”
