Healthy eating and inclusivity are core tenets of the learning experience for children at Nido Early School Bulleen, with educators and the leadership team working to create a space where children are immersed in the entire food cycle—from planting seeds to harvesting crops, preparing meals, and enjoying healthy food.

This immersive approach, the provider believes, nurtures a love for healthy food, sustainability, and cultural inclusion.

Through hands-on gardening and multicultural cooking sessions with an in-house chef, children engage in learning experiences that spark curiosity and deepen understanding and encourage them to explore healthy foods and vegetables, fostering familiarity and enthusiasm for nutritious eating habits that could last a lifetime.

“We’ve fully embraced gardening as part of our educational program here at Nido. Watching children plant, nurture, and then cook with the vegetables they’ve grown is a fun and engaging way to teach healthy eating. They gain valuable skills while appreciating the effort behind the food on their plates,” Molly Robertson, Executive Service Manager at Nido Early School Bulleen explained.

Alongside the chef, children then have the opportunity to create dishes inspired by their family traditions, celebrating the many cultures present within the school community. This initiative fosters pride in their own backgrounds while introducing them to a world of new flavours, enriching their appreciation for diverse cultures.

“Nido is proud to have such a culturally rich environment, with some early schools representing up to 35 different nationalities,” Nadia Wilson-Ali, Nido’s Director of Education & Quality said.

“Our weekly culinary sessions often offer children the chance to celebrate their family and cultural identity through food. It’s wonderful to see them excited about preparing dishes that reflect their family’s culture, and just as eager to try foods from other cultures”.
