Edge walks away from three-storey childcare centre development

Edge Early Learning has withdrawn its application to build a multi-storey childcare centre in Bulimba, Queensland.

The provider had proposed the development of a three-storey 1,771,7 square metre centre with the capacity to cater for 122 children. ‘Podium’ play areas were to be available at the ground level, and levels one and two of the building.

The site for the proposed centre is located on the intersection of two busy roads next to Bulimba State School and across the road from a petrol service station.

During the application process local Councillor Kara Cook opposed the development due to concerns around traffic congestion, parking, height, and air quality. A petition against the development received 444 signatures and local residents held an onsite rally to express concerns.

Edge Early Learning’s urban planning and design consultants Wolter Consulting Group outlined in the development’s application that the location of parking and access to the site had been designed to reduce traffic congestion in the area as much as possible, and that an air quality assessment had been undertaken to meet the requirements of Brisbane City Council’s air quality impacts.

However the Brisbane City Council asked for more information about the development to be supplied. Edge Early Learning had until 20 September 2018 to respond to the council’s request for information regarding the concerns, but chose to withdraw the application for development on 19 September 2018.
