A new chapter for the playgroup movement, uniting community organisations and researchers nationwide

Playgroup Australia has announced the launch of its expanded membership model, inviting organisations and researchers across Australia to express their interest in joining Playgroup Australia: The National Playgroup Alliance.

As the national peak body for playgroups, Playgroup Australia has spent more than 40 years championing the vital role of playgroups in supporting children’s development through play and socialisation, strengthening families, and building more connected communities. With the launch of this new model, Playgroup Australia is now opening its membership to a broader network of service providers, community organisations, and research institutions.

“We know that playgroups change lives. They boost early childhood development, reduce social isolation, and improve parent wellbeing,” said Patricia O’Donovan, CEO of Playgroup Australia. “As The National Playgroup Alliance, Playgroup Australia aims to bring together organisations already delivering this impact on the ground. We’re stronger when we work together.”

Expressions of Interest for New Membership Opportunities

Playgroup Australia is now seeking EOIs from organisations and research institutions interested in joining The National Playgroup Alliance through two new proposed membership streams, to complement the voting membership of founding state and territory playgroup associations:

  • Affiliate Membership – for organisations that deliver or support playgroups as part of their service model.
  • Research Membership – for universities and research bodies contributing to the growing playgroup evidence base.

As part of the National Alliance, members of Playgroup Australia will benefit from:

  • Collective VoiceShape national research and policy agendas. Members contribute to Playgroup Australia’s national advocacy and research priorities through consultations and advisory groups.
  • Impact and Profile – Amplify your work through joint campaigns such as National Playgroup Week, and co-branded materials that raise awareness of playgroup benefits in the early years.
  • Connection and Networking – Build relationships with like-minded organisations through webinars, roundtables and national events.
  • Collaboration and Growth – Opportunities to collaborate with Playgroup Australia on initiatives that enhance service delivery, including participation in projects supported through national partnerships.

The launch of Playgroup Australia as The National Playgroup Alliance and the welcoming of new members marks a turning point in how playgroups are recognised and resourced as part of Australia’s early years ecosystem.

“This is not just a new tagline, it’s a call to collective action,” said Ms O’Donovan. “We are inviting all organisations who believe in the power of playgroups to join us in delivering stronger outcomes for children and families.”
