ADHD awareness month 2025: Understanding the many faces of ADHD

In October, communities around the world mark ADHD Awareness Month a global initiative to raise understanding of Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). In 2025, the theme is “The Many Faces of ADHD,” highlighting the diversity of experiences and strengths of people living with ADHD.
For those in early childhood education and care (ECEC), ADHD Awareness Month is an opportunity to deepen awareness, strengthen inclusive practice, and partner with families in supporting children’s learning and development.
Understanding ADHD in early learning settings is critical as:
- ADHD can present differently in each child, affecting attention, regulation, and participation.
- Early identification and supportive environments can make a profound difference in outcomes.
- Inclusive approaches align with the National Quality Standard (NQS) and the Early Years Learning Framework (V2.0), particularly principles of equity, inclusion, and respect for diversity.
ADHD is not a one-size-fits-all condition. The 2025 theme identifies that children and adults with ADHD may show a wide range of traits, from high energy and creativity to difficulties with organisation or impulse control. Raising awareness can assist educators and communities move beyond stereotypes, recognising each individual’s unique strengths and challenges.
ECEC services can support ADHD Awareness Month by:
- Hosting professional learning sessions on ADHD-friendly strategies.
- Sharing family resources from ADHD Australia to build community understanding.
- Embedding strengths-based approaches in programming and practice.
- Using children’s literature, stories, and play experiences to normalise diversity in attention, energy, and learning styles.
Awareness is the first step toward meaningful inclusion.
For ECEC services, this can mean continuing to embrace practices that respect individuality, support regulation, and celebrate children’s many ways of being and learning.
