The Benevolent Society’s Gracemere and Mount Morgan teams get messy

Staff and children from The Benevolent Society’s Gracemere & Mount Morgan Early Years Place recently attended a messy play event hosted by Play Matters Rockhampton at Rockhampton Showgrounds.
The event provided an opportunity for children to enjoy a day out where the aim was to create the biggest mess possible, fully exploring their senses and developing fine and gross motor skills.
“Messy play opens the opportunity for adults to talk with their child about what they can see, hear, touch, taste, and smell, and assists in language development by encouraging children to explore descriptive words to explain what they are feeling and smelling,” said Christine Harvey, Child & Family Practitioner at Gracemere & Mount Morgan Early Years Place.
“It encourages children to explore their creativity and imagination. Through utilising their five senses, children can explore differing textures and materials, supporting their cognitive development and laying an introductory foundation to the world of science.”
A wide array of resources like water, sand, dirt or paint were on offer for the children to explore.
The team created an experience for children based on the familiar song/story We’re going on a Bear Hunt, which allowed parents and children to explore the different sensory stations which included slime, shredded paper, corn flour goop, a box of streamers and wet paint.
