KU Windale marks 125 year anniversary with charity and sustainability
Children and educators from KU Windale Preschool marked the 125 year anniversary of KU Children’s Services by making and baked goods using produce from their gardens to raise funds for Centre for Hope, a local charity who supports children and families in the local community.
Founded in 1895, KU Children’s Services was the first provider of early childhood education and care (ECEC) in Australia.
The service used the 2021 lockdown period to plant herb and vegetable seedlings in the garden, Director Nicole Dean explained.
“When the children came back from lockdown, we had some discussions about how to use the produce we had grown and how we could make a donation to a local charity in celebration of KU’s 125th year.”
“We decided to make different baked goods each day for two weeks and we had them for sale each afternoon for parents when they arrived for pick up.”
Selling the baked goods was in line with KU’s anniversary theme of “making a difference through 125 years of social impact and early education”.
The service chose Centre for Hope as the local service has given support to several families in the past.
“Celebrating 125 years meant that we could continue the social justice work that KU values,” Ms Wood told local paper Newcastle Weekly.
“KU Windale is a social justice service within KU and it felt great to be able to give back to our local community and make connections in the process.”
