Parents in Education Grants proving invaluable at SA preschools
A South Australian Department of Education initiative to help support parent learning is proving invaluable to educators, parents and children in preschools, and schools, across the state.
Known as Parents in Education Grants, the scheme is designed to provide funding to support initiatives that help families from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds to understand what their children are learning and how they can support their ongoing educational progress in the home environment.
In addition, the funds are also being used to encourage positive relationships between their child’s preschool community.
“About 70 per cent of our school community is from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds,” said Principal at Cowandilla Primary School and Children’s Centre Katrina Sexton.
“But the language of maths – such as the difference between digits, numerals and numbers – and the concepts used can be difficult regardless of the language you speak. We want to share it with families so they are able to reinforce that learning at home.”
The school’s governing council requested an investment in helping parents understand the metalanguage used to teach maths, and the school was recently awarded a $5000 Parents in Education grant.
So far a total of $83,000 has been shared between 26 schools and preschools.
