Intergenerational connection fostered with new Uniting NSW.ACT ECEC service
Uniting NSW.ACT have opened a new early learning service in the Sydney suburb of Westmead, designed to foster intergenerational connection through its colocation with retirement living, seniors gym and aged care facilities.
Children and residents will be encouraged to share their experience and knowledge with each other through community programs on the site, building on research which suggests the benefits for both age groups are extensive.
Officially opening today, 11 January, the Uniting Westmead long day care centre will run with an approved capacity of 75 children aged between six weeks and five years.
Intergenerational relationships will be fostered through programs which allow children and the aged to explore their creativity and engage with one another in experiences which support children to learn through play.
The programs will also integrate the number of purpose built spaces within the complex and early learning centre which are designed to encourage connections to nature, and sustainability, including a mud kitchen, chicken pen, amd vegetable gardens, as well as being in close proximity to Parramatta Park, where Bush Kindy programs will be run.
Uniting head of early learning, Rod Nadwie-Smith said the development was an exciting one for both the provider and the community.
“The Uniting Westmead site is dedicated to bringing different generations together to foster awareness, understanding and respect between each other whilst reducing social isolation of some of our most vulnerable Australians,” he said.
“It is especially exciting to imagine how the early learning centre will interact with the campus and imagine the supportive community that will birth in this precinct.”
