Somerset Cottage Early Childhood Education and Care Centre opens at Nepean Hospital

The newly constructed Somerset Cottage Early Childhood Education and Care Centre was opened last week at Nepean Hospital, New South Wales, by local member Stuart Ayres.
Mr Ayres joined Kay Hyman, Nepean Blue Mountains Local Health District (NBMLHD) Chief Executive, and Peter Collins, Chairperson NBMLHD for the official opening, which followed a recent smoking ceremony that was undertaken by Darug Elder, Chris Tobin to cleanse the unit when construction was finalised.
The service opening represented the fulfilment of a commitment made as part of the NSW Government’s $1 billion Nepean Redevelopment of the hospital, one which Mr Ayres said he was proud to see delivered.
With capacity for 68 children, the purpose built service was designed with input from staff and parents “to create a fun, safe and welcoming environment for everyone”.
The relocation process from the previous onsite service was carefully managed to ensure a smooth transition into the new facility and the service was able to remain open for staff and their families throughout the transition period.
In the coming weeks the old service will be demolished to facilitate construction of a 14-storey clinical tower to support the work of the hospital.
