Sue Gordon recognised as a hidden treasure for her work with ECEC in regional town

Young resident Sue Gordon was recently presented with an award by her local MP Steph Cooke for her services to early childhood education and care (ECEC) in the region, local publication The Young Witness has reported. 

Ms Gordon’s award recognises her inclusion onto the 2019 Hidden Treasures Honour Roll and pays tribute to her extensive work for children and families, which began when she arrived in the region as a newlywed in 1984. 

The honour roll is an initiative of the Department of Primary Industries Rural Women’s network and recognises the outstanding efforts of women volunteers in New South Wales, promoting the valuable role of volunteering to the community.

Once Ms Gordon was established in the area, she began her engagement with ten years as a Nursing Mothers Association counsellor, while also working to establish the Brock Street Pre-School Kindergarten in 1988, and Annette’s Place Pre-School and Childcare Centre, The Young Witness reported. 

Ms Gordon was appointed to represent the South West Slopes on the NSW Government Advisory Committee for Country Childhood Multi-Purpose Services, before joining the state council of the Isolated Children and Parents Association in 2001, where she was elected as state treasurer. 

Between 2001 and 2012, she held a variety of roles with the Isolated Children and Parents Association including treasurer, vice president and president.

In addition, Ms Gordon was elected to the Young Rural Lands Protection Board and served as a director from 1997 to 2008. She also held executive positions on the South West Slopes Sheep Breeders Association between 1998 and 2019, serving as treasurer and secretary, and at times both, The Young Witness said. 

Ms Gordon has also worked with Rotary International as a volunteer, joining in 1996 and serving as treasurer, as well as president during 2011 and 2012.
