Celebrating diversity and belonging: Montessori Minds’ culture wall inspires connection

A striking display at Montessori Minds is transforming the way families, educators and children experience cultural identity, belonging and connection.
A living map of cultural identity
At the heart of the centre’s reception, a vibrant and interactive Culture Wall showcases more than 55 national flags representing the nationalities of its children, families and educators. Red dots mark staff heritage, while green dots indicate family connections. This simple yet powerful design forms a dynamic, evolving map of the community’s cultural tapestry.
The Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander flags are positioned centrally, acknowledging First Nations peoples as the traditional custodians of the land and reinforcing the centre’s commitment to respect and inclusion.
Centre Manager Dr Sharma described the wall as “a visual representation of who we are – a place where everyone belongs, is seen and celebrated”.
A catalyst for belonging and connection
Families are invited to place a green dot beside their country’s flag when they join, often sharing stories or experiences in the process. This small ritual fosters pride, sparks conversations, and strengthens relationships within the community.
Parents have described the experience as deeply moving:
- “That little green sticker made me feel seen.”
- “When I saw my flag already there with so many dots, I knew we weren’t alone.”
- “It feels like home, even though we’re far from it.”
The Culture Wall has also inspired new friendships, parent-led cultural contributions, and spontaneous learning moments across all age groups.
Learning through diversity
The initiative aligns strongly with the Montessori philosophy, which promotes respect for the child, independence, and preparation for life in a diverse world. Children frequently engage with the display, asking questions, identifying their flags, and expressing curiosity about different countries.
This curiosity has led to themed cultural weeks, language exploration, cooking experiences, and artistic projects. Educators incorporate these interests into learning activities, supporting the Victorian Early Years Learning and Development Framework (VEYLDF) outcomes, including:
- Identity: Children gain pride in their heritage and uniqueness.
- Community: Families experience connection and shared understanding.
- Wellbeing: A sense of belonging enhances confidence and emotional security.
- Learning: Interest in geography, language and culture drives meaningful exploration.
- Communication: Conversations flourish, strengthening relationships and knowledge sharing.
Embodying values of inclusion and global citizenship
Montessori Minds CEO Aseem Gupta highlighted the wall as “a symbol of the centre’s dedication to creating a truly inclusive community”.
The Culture Wall embodies the centre’s core values:
