New South Wales based Campbelltown City Council will use Federal Government funding to install battery storage at five of its Council owned and operated early learning centres with a view of reducing the council’s power bill for good.

Funded through the Federal Government’s community energy upgrades fund, Campbelltown Council received $76,894 towards the battery storage at the five centres, which includes Minto Early Learning Centre in Redfern Road, shown above.

The batteries utilise excess solar energy generated onsite to reduce electricity costs and increase the resilience of these critical community assets.

Member for Macarthur, Dr Mike Dr Freelander, welcomed the council’s successful application for funding saying he was “delighted that Campbelltown Council will benefit from our government’s innovative policy, which will help charge up local childcare centres and help ensure they have access to resilient and renewable energy opportunities.’’

“Protecting our environment is vital and to do so whilst saving rate payers money at the same time, this is terrific news for our community.”

The Campbelltown funding grant is one of 58 around the country. One-off grants of between $25,000 to $2.5 million have been awarded through the merit based program, with local governments providing at least 50 per cent of project costs.

Successful funding applications include 31 upgrades to local aquatic centres and five grants for smart electric vehicle charging infrastructure for local government vehicles.

Round one was oversubscribed, with 165 applications overall for the first $50 million package of funding.

Round two is expected to open shortly, with unsuccessful applicants from round 1 encouraged to reapply.
