ECEC services encouraged to dress up for Book Week and support World Literacy

Book Week is a highlight of the early childhood education and care (ECEC) calendar in many services, offering children the opportunity to connect in a tangible way with characters from their favourite stories. 

 

For many services, Book Week has also become a time to give back, and to connect with the community, through fundraising for the World Literacy Foundation Australia.

 

In 2024 more than 390 different schools and early childhood centres across Australia are fundraising to buy books for children in Uganda, working toward the Foundation’s ultimate goal of providing 4,000 books in support of 25,000 children in 12 schools in a regional area of the country. 

 

“95 per cent of these children don’t own a single book,” Foundation CEO Andrew Kay explained.

 

Schools and ECEC settings can sign up for the Book Week Fundraiser via the World Literacy Foundation website.  

 

For local school representative Antonella Di Fiori Book Week is a wonderful way for the community to raise awareness of the importance of reading with children plus incorporate a charity/fundraising angle to provide the opportunity for children to share their love of reading with others less fortunate. 

 

“It is a great way for a school, local businesses and the community to instill the habit of reading books and share stories which creates a little bit of magic for the young readers in our region,” she said.
