Explorers Early Learning welcomes ASTA grant
Early childhood education and care (ECEC) provider Explorers Early Learning recently received a grant from the Australian Science Teachers Association (ASTA) which was used to run an insightful in centre visit during National Science Week.
As part of the National Science Week celebrations in August, Explorers welcomed Jaeden Williams, the founder of Biik Bundjil, to its Brighton East Centre, where Mr Williams engaged the Kinder children in an immersive exploration of the six Boonwurrung seasons, offering a unique opportunity to delve into the rich First Nations heritage that has shaped the Australian landscape.
During his visit, Mr Williams led the children on a captivating journey, retracing the footsteps of his ancestors from the stunning coast of Nairm (Port Phillip Bay) to the majestic hills.
Through this immersive experience, the children unlocked the secrets of the stars and gained insights into their profound significance in the Boonwurrung culture.
Explorers Early Learning Founder and CEO Lynda Salvo highlighted the importance of such visits in enriching children’s learning experiences.
“At Explorers, we are dedicated to fostering an understanding and appreciation of diverse cultures. Jaeden’s visit allows us to bring an Indigenous (sic.) perspective to our children, enhancing their connection to the land and deepening their cultural awareness.”
This experience not only educated children but also provided parents and educators with a valuable opportunity to learn about the markers for each season that guided the Boonwurrung in their caring for Country.
Explorers Early Learning extended its gratitude to the Australian Science Teachers Association for their generous grant, which enabled the organisation to contribute meaningfully to the cultural enrichment of its young learners.
