Camp Australia handball competition doubles in size with ‘record turnout’ in 2023
Outside school hours care (OSHC) provider Camp Australia was thrilled with the participation levels in its recent Handball Championships, which culminated in Regional Finals in 10 different locations, with a $10,000 prize pool on offer.
The handball competition was originally designed to help inspire children to get active and motivated about sport following the impact of COVID-19 lockdowns, and has grown to more than double from the 12,500 entries in the inaugural competition held in 2021.
This year nearly 30,000 school-aged children participated in the competition, with the winners from each of Camp Australia’s in-service championships held throughout Term 1 competing in the Regional Finals during the Autumn school holidays.
“The growth of the Handball Championships over recent years is extremely encouraging as we continue our mission of Guiding Children’s Growth,” said Camp Australia CEO Warren Jacobson.
“This years’ turnout shows us that we can combat the sense of disconnection and inactivity caused by the pandemic if children have the right opportunities to participate in fun activities and to socialise with their friends and family.”
Mr Jacobson thanked all those who contributed to the success of the “mammoth event”, including North Queensland Cowboys retired Indigenous All Stars representative Ray Thompson who stepped in with an offer of encouragement and support for the children.
The final word goes to 2022 Championship winner Kiyara, aged 11, who said: “I look forward to the handball championships, because I get to meet new people who enjoy the game as much as I do. The championships are super fun and the main event day is a lot of energy. I enjoy the competition.“
