Vic Kids Eat Well – a new state-wide movement focused on boosting healthy options
Vic Kids Eat Well is a new statewide movement in Victoria which focuses on boosting healthy food and drink options in places where children spend most of their time.
The program officially launched late last week, and works with outside school hours care (OSHC), schools, sports clubs, recreation facilities and community and council owned facilities to create a movement which supports children with the fuel they need to learn, play, grow and thrive.
It is delivered by Cancer Council Victoria’s Achievement Program, in partnership with Nutrition Australia’s Healthy Eating Advisory Service and is backed by a committed workforce of health promotion professionals from a range of community health organisations and councils.
To increase support in some of Victoria’s most disadvantaged communities, 13 local government areas will also have the benefit of a dedicated workforce of Healthy Kids Advisors, delivered by Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden Foundation and supported by the Victorian and Australian Governments.
There are four key actions within the program for OSHC services, schools and other community organisations:
- Refresh the fridge – give sugary drinks to the boot and let water take the spotlight.
- Switch up the snacks – ditch the sweets and offer delicious healthy snacks that give kids the fuel they need.
- Change up the menu – give fruit and veggies a chance to shine.
- Put the ‘fun’ into fundraising and marketing – add health appeal to meal deals and fundraising.
A content hub with social media posts and other resources is available to support promotion of the program, and those who are interested are encouraged to promote Vic Kids Eat Well by following on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and LinkedIn using the channel @VicKidsEatWell.
