Family Day Care (FDC) educators, co-ordinators and services have been acknowledged for their contributions to the FDC sector with the presentation of the 2019 “Excellence in Family Day Care Star Awards”.

The Awards recognise those who are both new to the sector and also those who have made a contribution to family day care over a sustained period of time.

The Emerging Star Award honours an educator, coordinator and service that began working in the FDC sector in the past two years and has already displayed excellence in their work in this short period of time.

Tasmania was prominent in this category, with Educator Heather Walters from Mission Australia winning the educator category, and Co-ordinator Lisa Brooke from Adventure Patch Family Day Care both being recognised. In the service category, Queensland-based Empowered Family Day Care took the crown.

The Perpetual Star Award honours an educator, coordinator and service that have worked in the FDC sector for over 15 years and continues to display excellence in their work.

In the educator category, Carolyn Douglas from New South Wales Northern Beaches Council Family Day Care was awarded, joined by Samantha Jackson Van Hummell from Queensland’s Wynnum Family Day Care, who secured the co-ordinator win, and Victorian service Baw Baw Family Day Care being successful in the service category.

FDA Chief Executive Officer Andrew Paterson said this year a record number of over 5,000 nominations were placed in the awards; testament to the growing recognition of the sector’s many and unique benefits in supporting children, families and communities across Australia.

“To be chosen as the 2019 Star Award winner is not only a reward for each winner’s dedication to providing support to family day care educators, families and children, it is also a reflection on the impact that they have made during their time in the sector,” said Mr Paterson.

National finalists for the 2019 Excellence in Family Day Care Awards will be announced on 14 October 2019, with the National Educator, Coordinator and Service of the Year to be announced at the Family Day Care Australia 2019 Excellence in Family Day Care Awards Gala Dinner on 23 November 2019 in Hobart.
