World Food Safety Day 2019 shines a light on good food safety practices for ECEC

Today is the first World Food Safety Day, designed to put a spotlight on good food safety practices in all facets of society, most especially on those caring for vulnerable populations, such as early childhood education and care (ECEC). The theme of the 2019 event is ‘Food Safety: Everyone’s Business’
The event serves as a reminder to those business who serve food of the importance of good food safety practices. Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ) acting Chief Executive Officer Dr Scott Crerar says food safety can’t ever be taken for granted.
“There are more than 4 million estimated cases of foodborne illness in Australia each year and everyone has a role to play in reducing that number,” Dr Crerar said.
He pointed out that food borne illnesses can be deadly, especially for vulnerable populations like babies, pregnant women and the elderly.
“World Food Safety Day is an opportunity for food producers, businesses and consumers to remember that we all play a role in ensuring the food we make, sell and eat is safe and nutritious in order to sustain life and promote good health.” Dr Crerar said.
A joint initiative between the World Health Organization, the United Nations General Assembly, and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, World Food Safety Day presents an ideal opportunity for ECEC settings to review their policies, procedures and practices in relation to food safety.
For general information about World Food Safety Day, see the World Health Organization website information and resources pages. FSANZ has a range of resources to help consumers and food businesses ensure the food they make is safe. Fact sheets on Bacteria, viruses and toxins that cause foodborne illness are available, alongside the Food safety standards.
A range of advice and support in relation to food safety, specific to those working in ECEC is also available.
