Science tells us that some children develop resilience, or the ability to overcome serious hardship, while others do not.

Understanding the factors that hinder or support resilience in the early years is crucial. This can inform the development of effective policy and practice and support educators to help children overcome adversity and reach their potential.

Independent Schools Victoria is hosting an online event for early childhood educators as part of its Reignite series: Thriving with purpose in an uncertain world. Melissa Rivard from Harvard University’s Center on the Developing Child will unpack the science of resilience and child development.

Melissa will explore:

  • Three principles from the science of early childhood
  • How significant adversity can disrupt healthy development in young children
  • Guiding principles for designing programs, policies and services that support resilience in children and families.

There will also be dedicated time for small group learning and discussion to unpack content, share ideas and develop our collective understanding.
