Meeting the child’s ordinary and extraordinary needs
“Neglect is not one thing. If we think about a child’s essential needs – they have so many. So, when one or more of these essential needs are not met or only chaotically met, the consequences can be dire.” Dr Annette Jackson
Adjunct Associate Professor Dr Annette Jackson, Executive Director Education and Statewide Services, Berry Street Yooralla, will share the work she and others are doing to respond to children who’ve experienced serious neglect so they can receive the support they need to recover and thrive.
With a social work career spanning 40 years including Child Protection, Clinical Practice, and Out of Home care, Annette has worked with children and families at risk in many different roles and has always been struck by how easy it is to dismiss the impact of neglect, despite witnessing first-hand evidence about how harmful it can be to children whether they are a baby or a teenager. This has led Annette to undertake research as part of a PhD to explore interventions for children who have experienced neglect.
In this workshop, Annette will lead participants through a series of conversations about the latest research with a practice focus and practical ideas. This will include how we can support children impacted by different types of neglect including physical, emotional, medical, supervisory, developmental and cultural neglect.
