Are you eager to minimise food waste in your setting? Stop throwing away those precious food scraps!

Your service’s food scraps present unlimited opportunities to engage children in early STEM and sustainability learning, which is why Little Scientists has scheduled this two-hour online workshop dedicated to the wonderful world of waste.

In this interactive workshop, educators will explore practical, STEM-focused approaches to sustainable food practices aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 12 and the EYLF V2.0 Principle of Sustainability. Educators will gain ideas and knowledge to support children to:

  • Follow recipes and engage in cooking experiences using food scraps.
  • Explore hands-on food preservation techniques.
  • Dispose of food scraps appropriately and understand why this is important.
  • Cultivate a garden using food scraps.
  • Track and measure their food waste using early mathematics skills like counting, estimating, and graphing.

Integrating sustainable food practices into early STEM learning offers young children empowering and hands-on experiences that builds their foundational STEM skills and environmental awareness. Exploring food waste can also develop children’s understanding of key STEM concepts like life cycles, decomposition, measurement, and data collection.

This online interactive workshop is suitable for educators and teachers of children 0-8 years old. It is aligned with the EYLF 2.0 and invites educators attending live to ask questions, share ideas, and engage in hands-on activities during the workshop.

Purchasing a ticket allows you to tune in live or via a recording. While we strongly encourage you to attend live, a recording will be shared via email following the event and can be viewed for 3 days after the email is sent. This workshop will be held on:
