Later this year, all voting Australians have a chance to pave the way toward justice for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people by voting in the Referendum for a Voice to Parliament.

The Referendum will be a history-shaping moment. If successful, it will see a new chapter written into the Australian Constitution, and it has been promised as a significant step in the journey toward a Treaty. Given the level of attention this event is receiving, it’s to be expected that children and young people will have questions.

To help you both understand some more of the ‘who, what, when, where and why’ of the Referendum and Treaty, and how to discuss the whole process with children, we have asked Aunty Geraldine Atkinson (she/her) if she would kindly share her knowledge with our members.

Aunty Geraldine is a Bangerang and Wiradjuri woman, President of the Victorian Aboriginal Education Association Incorporated (VAEAI) and the Co-chair of the First Peoples Assembly of Victoria; the body that oversees the development of a Treaty in Victoria. She is also a grandmother to nine grandchildren.

Aunty Geraldine will cover:

– How the Uluru Statement from the Heart is an invitation to the people of Australia

– What the proposition of the Referendum will be – How the First People’s Assembly of Victoria demonstrates that a Voice can be successful

– The Treaty process in Victoria – achievements so far and what is next.

We are extremely grateful and humbled that Aunty Geraldine is kindly offering to share her wisdom with all of us. This webinar will be unmissable.
