Dream, draw, design, make: From STEM to STEAM in early years’ education
TIME: 4pm afternoon tea – 4:30 to 6pm workshop.
WORKSHOP AIMS:
1.To introduce engineering (the E in STEM) and to help integrate it into the early years’ setting.2.To highlight links between engineering the arts; visual arts, also story-telling, books, and music (the E&A in STEAM).3.To explore engineering design processes to facilitate educators to build on this and be able to work on designing, drawing, implementing, and documenting engineering projects with children.4. Empowering educators to plan and facilitate an engineering project with groups of children preparing, dreaming, drawing, designing, and implementing – topic for the modelling workshop is Robots.
Resource: Young engineers picture book and Young Engineers – Projects
Pre-preparation: educators to bring cardboard, boxes, foil, robot-type accessories e.g pipes, tubes, etc. to bring to share in workshop. Pencils, pens will also be handy.
