Program Description

An Encounter with Paper: Transforming thinking about the role of materials for learning

How do we learn with paper?
What questions does paper propose to/with the world?

This webinar focuses on how, as educators, we might think ‘otherwise’ with materials in early childhood learning spaces. Thinking with paper as an active participant in children’s (and adult) learning (Pacini-Ketchabaw, Kind, & Kocher, 2016), this session responds to/with paper as a ‘proposal’ in the everyday –gesturing to us via multiple and complex histories, possibilities and potentialities.

Drawing on contemporary theory, materials scholarship and research, Kelly Boucher will activate examples of everyday moments of practice with paper in early childhood settings.

This session will draw on:

  • The pedagogy of listening (Rinaldi, 2001)
  • Supporting paper as ‘participant’ in ECE spaces.
  • Sustainability/ethics

Side note: If possible, participants are encouraged to have access to a variety of paper (newspaper, recycled wrapping paper, paper grocery bags, recycled packaging etc) however, it is not essential for engaging with the experience.
