Applications open for Round 2 of Words Grow Minds grants in South Australia

by Isabella Southwell

May 19, 2025

Early years services across South Australia are now eligible to apply for funding through Round 2 of the Words Grow Minds Local Collaboration Grants program.

Led by Raising Literacy Australia, the campaign combines neuroscience, community outreach and practical resources to support the development and wellbeing of children aged three and under. It encourages parents and caregivers to talk, play, read and sing with children during the early years to support brain development and connection.

The campaign is supported by a statewide media effort and local activation through early years services. In 2024, 20 services delivered locally tailored projects that engaged hundreds of families.

Community-led initiatives at the heart of the program

Twenty grants of $3,000 each (excluding GST) are available for early years or community services delivering free events or programs aligned with the campaign’s key messages. Projects must:

  • Collaborate with at least one other service
  • Engage families through accessible, community-based activities
  • Promote the Words Grow Minds campaign across physical and digital platforms
  • Measure outcomes using attendance, feedback or engagement data

Priority will be given to services supporting children aged three and under, particularly those not currently accessing early childhood services.

Eligible expenses may include staffing, outreach activities, event materials, marketing, catering and guest speakers. Services funded in 2024 are welcome to apply again, provided the new proposal demonstrates innovation, expanded reach or new partnerships.
