A long-standing collaboration between Karla Kuliny Aboriginal Corporation and the Australian Childhood Foundation (ACF) has been honoured at the 2025 Community Services Excellence Awards in Western Australia, receiving the inaugural Inspiring Partnership Award between an Aboriginal Community Controlled Organisation (ACCO) and a Community Service Organisation (CSO).

A story of shared leadership

The partnership was recognised for its culturally strong, healing centred approach to supporting Aboriginal children and families. The beginnings traced  back to 2011, when respected Noongar leader Dr Glenda Kickett first partnered with ACF to help shape a model of therapeutic care grounded in cultural identity and community leadership.

The early collaboration planted the seeds for a relationship that has grown steadily over the years. Today, it is a living example of Dabakan Kooyliny, Go Slowly, Walk Slowly, Walk Together, an approach that reflects deep trust, shared decision making and long term commitment.

Honouring the journey

ACF CEO Janise Mitchell accepted the award alongside Dr Kickett, following their appearance on a panel at the Western Australian Council of Social Service (WACOSS) conference. The panel reflected on the 15 year journey and the key learnings that have shaped the partnership over time.

Why this matters for early learning

For early childhood education and care (ECEC) leaders, the Karla Kuliny and ACF partnership is a reminder of the value of building long term relationships with local ACCOs to inform culturally responsive practice and leadership. It also demonstrates how cross sector partnerships, when approached with humility and respect, can lead to transformative outcomes for children, families and communities.
