Little Scientists Online Workshop: Making Your Sandpit a STEM Learning Powerhouse
The sandpit is a staple of early learning settings, but it’s also one of the most underutilised STEM learning spaces. Sand play is so much more than digging and sandcastles, the unique sensory environment of a sandpit supports children to freely explore texture, weight, movement, balance, force, volume, and measurement and is particularly valuable if your service has limited access to natural space.
In this two-hour online workshop, educators will be challenged to reimagine the sandpit as their setting’s most powerful and dynamic early STEM learning resource. Educators will gain:
- Strategies for embedding STEM concepts related to physics, mathematics, engineering, and acoustics into sandpit activities.
- Creative ways to plan sandpit-based STEM learning experiences.
- Insights into the pedagogical role of the sandpit in supporting inquiry-based learning.
- An understanding of how to use the tactile, sensory-rich environment of the sand pit to support children’s foundational STEM skills.
This online workshop is suitable for educators and teachers of children 0-8 years old. It is aligned with the EYLF 2.0 and invites educators attending live to ask questions, share ideas, and engage in hands-on activities during the workshop.
