Westbourne Grammar School, 300 Sayers Road, Truganina, VIC

Children aged up to three years old (thoughtfully called infants and toddlers) have sophisticated developmental capacities and, so, specific developmental needs. It could be argued, however, that infants and toddlers in ECE settings do not always receive the value, resourcing, and sophisticated attention they deserve. Drawing on rights-based philosophies from the educational project of Reggio Emilia, this workshop examines images of infants and toddlers as both vulnerable and competent, then unpacks how these play out in interdependent ECE practices.

Using a practice theory approach and the notion of an ‘ECE pedagogy complex’ to frame discussions, participants will be invited to:

  • – critically reflect on how images of very young children guide their everyday actions and interactions (practices) with infants and toddlers, colleagues, families, and communities,
  • – consider if, where and how transformation is needed in their practice with infants and toddlers,
  • – identify how the principles of the Reggio Emilia educational project can help them create a plan of action for their professional development in infant-toddler pedagogy.

So, please join us! It will be wonderful to spend focused time honouring our youngest citizens.
