OSHC children’s voices wanted for Big City, Small Child project in Melbourne

Outside School Hours Care (OSHC) services in Melbourne and surrounds, with educators who are committed to allowing children to connect with, and contribute to their world (Outcome Two of the approved learning frameworks), and to upholding Article 12 of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child, may be interested in the Big City, Small Child event being held in Melbourne in early June.
Big City – Small Child is an event designed to allow children to have their say in shaping Melbourne’s future. Hosted by the City of Melbourne, at the Melbourne Town Hall, the organisers are calling on children aged 6 – 12 to “help us see the city through the eyes of a child.”
Child-led interactive performances will support those in attendance to understand the core values of children, and hear their bold ideas on things like living well, being safe, reaching their potential and having a say.
The one hour performance will combine arts and politics, and will be “filled with questions, voting and discussion”, organisers said.
Children will have their voice included in civic conversations, and be introduced to Council, with a special visit to Council Chambers in the Town Hall. Insights gathered during the forum will aid in informing the City of Melbourne’s Children’s Plan, to be released later in 2019.
The forum, which has both morning and afternoon sessions, is free of charge, with limited spaces available. Children must be accompanied by an adult, who must remain for the duration of the session.
