Short-term assistance available for state-funded kindergartens in Victoria

Early childhood teachers (ECTs) working within state-funded Victorian kindergarten programs may be able to access additional short-term support to assist children with a diagnosed disability or developmental delay through a program offered by Uniting, in partnership with the Victorian Government Department of Education and Training.

The free service, known as Short Term Assistance, forms part of the Kindergarten Inclusion Support program. Designed to support ECTs by increasing their capacity to plan and support a child’s ongoing inclusion in kindergarten, the funding will contribute to the implementation of a short-term support plan for a duration of up to 10 weeks, and a maximum of $2,850 per child.

Two types of additional support are available through the program. Program practice support is an inclusive program that is responsive to the child’s learning and development needs. Program practice support funding could be used for supportive aids like sensory toys, social story books, or additional support staff.

The second funding type, specialist consultancy and training, is used to upskill educators to  better meet the individual needs of the child. This could include lesson adjustments, adaptations, or modifications to the kindergarten program.

Funding is applied for by first meeting with the parent or guardian of the child, and then filling out the Short Term Assistance Plan together. The Short Term Assistance Plan aids both parties in identifying what support is required, and what can be provided through existing support resources. The plan is then submitted along with an application form for review and approval.

Applications can be made at any time during the kindergarten year.
