Minlaton Family Centre opening delayed because of site conditions

The opening of the new Southern Yorke Peninsula Childcare Centre, known as the Minlaton Family Centre, has been delayed.
The Centre is the outcome of co-efforts between Council and the community across several years, and construction began on Monday, 9 January 2023.
It was originally hoped that the purpose-built facility would be completed ahead of the scheduled completion date in time for week 1 of term 1, 2024, however latent site conditions have interrupted scheduled civil works which has unfortunately resulted in unforeseen construction delays.
Operator Yorke Peninsula Learning and Care has previously expressed concern about having enough staff to open the service, appealing to locals to reach out to family and friends who may be wishing to move to the region.
When Director Tanya Geister approached local news source Yorke Peninsula Country Times in December she said she would need “at least six qualified professionals” to meet the projected opening date, however the official statement from the Council cites “circumstances beyond the control of Council and operator Yorke Peninsula Learning and Care,” being behind the delay in opening.
“Council, along with the Centre’s Operator, are doing everything possible to have the facility open for the first week of March,” CEO Andrew Cameron said.
“Council understands the impact this delay may have on enrolled families and the community, and we sincerely apologise for any inconvenience caused.”
“We appreciate the understanding and patience of enrolled families and the community during this time.”
It is estimated that about 80 children will be enrolled at Minlaton by the end of 2024 with the Centre currently employing 29 staff (11 FTE).
Further updates will be provided by the Council as soon as possible.
