Sylvette Maralwuy one of seven Aboriginal educators graduating through RATE program

Sylvette Maralwuy from the Milingimbi School is one of seven Aboriginal educators to recently graduate from the Remote Aboriginal Teacher Education (RATE) program.
RATE streamlines support for Aboriginal educators through delivery of a targeted suite of professional development opportunities, including non-accredited training, vocational education and training (VET), and tertiary education qualifications.
The program builds the capacity of existing Aboriginal educators in remote and very remote education settings at every step of their education careers, and creates opportunities for Aboriginal educators who aspire to become qualified teachers.
A number of initiatives are covered under the RATE program, including school-based traineeships, VET qualifications, initial teaching qualifications, professional learning grants and mentor development training.
Ms Maralwuy completed her Certificate III Early Childhood Education and Care through the program, and will progress to her Diploma of Early Childhood Education and Care.
Other recent RATE graduates are:
- JoAnne Bayalawuy Thorne (Shepherdson College) – Diploma of Education Studies, and progressing to the second year of a Bachelor of Education Primary
- Kellyann Daly, Sharon Daly, Nadine Day and Chrysilla Miller (Woolianna School) – Undergraduate Certificate Remote Educators, and progressing to a Diploma of Education Studies
- Joy Hampton (Tennant Creek Primary School) – Undergraduate Certificate Remote Educators, and progressing to a Diploma of Education Studies
All RATE graduates are seen as highly-valued leaders because of their deep understanding of local education contexts, and as being essential in achieving the NT Department of Education’s key priorities of building an expert education workforce and improving cultural responsiveness.
