For Educator Chipo, OSHC offers the perfect mix of mentoring and opportunity
Chipo Makusha was inspired to explore a career in the outside school hours care (OSHC) sector after observing her mother’s passion for working with children in a long day care (LDC) setting.
“I see the work that my mum puts in working with children and I want to one day make an impact on children’s lives the way my mum has,” she shared.
Ms Makusha dedicates her time to building meaningful relationships with children, families and school staff, and cares deeply about the wellbeing of the children in her care.
“I would love to see them grow and become the person they aspire to be,” she said.
“I believe that children should be happy and live fulfilled lives from a young age.”
She began her ECEC journey working as a mentor for primary school children transitioning to high school, but also works as a junior sport coach, inspiring children aged 2–7 years old to have a lifelong love of sport.
Now that she is ensconced in ECEC, she believes this is the long term career path for her, and says that for those who are new to the sector, her advice is simple:
“Have fun and be proud of your work.”
“Enjoy every moment when working with children. Know you are making an impact in their life and it is rewarding.”
In Queensland, where Chipo lives and works, the Certificate III in Outside School Hours Care is available through Fee-Free TAFE across campuses state-wide. The entry level qualification provides the skills to start a career in OSHC. For more information, visit the TAFE Queensland website .
