Gledswood Homestead looking to be repurposed as a childcare centre

Historic property Gledswood Homestead, located in New South Wales suburb of Camden, could soon be transformed into an early childhood education and care (ECEC) service. 

As one of the region’s most significant heritage listed properties the proposal has attracted attention from local residents, with local paper The Camden Narellan Advertiser reporting that many believe use as an ECEC service is an unsuitable direction for the property. 

In 2013, Camden Council approved a three lot subdivision of the 45 hectares surrounding the property, at which time it was understood that the property itself would be significantly restored for public use. 

The property that the Gledswood Homestead is located on is listed on the State Heritage Register as an item of heritage significance.

Homestead owner Roy Nasso has submitted an application to Camden Council to turn the property into a 84 place preschool facility, seeking minor renovations and alterations to the existing building to accommodate the service, as well as the construction of outdoor play areas, shade structures, additional fencing and a car park.

The application outlines four indoor play areas catering for a range of ages, with associated amenities.

“The management of the proposed centre has a detailed and thorough understanding of what is required to achieve appropriate levels of maintenance safety and operational efficiency in a childcare centre,” the application states.
