Heritage listed Stream Hill school reimagined as potential ECEC service

A 150 year old primary school in the New South Wales Illawarra region could soon enjoy new life as a multimillion-dollar early learning service after plans for a 130 place long day care centre were submitted to Wollongong City Council recently.
The heritage listed West Dapto Public School, along with a headmaster’s residence opened in 1882 at 150 Sheaffes Rd, Stream Hill, and each building is now heritage listed.
As well as the long day care service, the development documents show additional construction alongside the conversion, such as a new single-storey dwelling, and car parking.
The school is currently being used as ‘a small scale preschool’, however the development firm who submitted the application intend to refurbish the historic buildings into a modern long day care centre with the addition of new amenities.
The application acknowledges the site’s historical significance and notes the development will not damage or alter the historical buildings significantly, but simply repurpose them.
Should the application be approved, the service would operate Monday through Friday from 6 am to 7 pm.
