Western Downs Regional Council seeks input over future of the town

Queensland’s Western Downs Regional Council is inviting employers, businesses, developers, industry stakeholders and the community to have their say in the development of a Regional Workforce Plan that will drive the future of employment, training, and skills development across the region.
The Regional Workforce Plan is a key initiative aimed at identifying current and future employment needs, skill shortages, and opportunities for growth across the Western Downs.
Input from the community will play a vital role in shaping practical strategies to support a strong, skilled, and adaptable local workforce, Mayor Andrew Smith said.
“This is a chance for employers, employees, jobseekers, students and business owners to share insights that will allow Council to better understand workforce challenges and opportunities in the Western Downs,” he added.
“Your voice will help guide local workforce development and ensure we’re investing in the right skills, training, and support for the future.”
The Mayor noted critical shortages in essential service areas including early childhood provision, nursing, aged care, retail and disability support, saying “these are the jobs that keep our region moving, and we need to ensure we have the right pathway and support to fill them.”
“The Western Downs is a dynamic and growing region, and we know that a strong, skilled workforce is essential to supporting our communities and driving future economic development,” he added.
“Feedback will directly inform strategies to build a resilient, responsive workforce that meets the needs of local industry now and into the future.”
The survey is open now with submissions to close on 11 April 2025.
The short survey can be completed online. For more information contact Council on 1300 268 624 (COUNCIL) or visit www.wdrc.qld.gov.au
