Service manager Racheal’s career journey

Early childhood education and care (ECEC) professional Racheal (on the right in each photo) has enjoyed a long and interesting career in the sector, the most recent step of which is becoming the service manager of Sparrow Early Learning Yarrabilba.
Having worked in ECEC for almost 15 years, with the last 10 years as part of the Sparrow family, she recently shared her career story, including advice for others who aspire to lead in the sector.
Racheal, a Sparrow Early Learning representative said, has made a significant impact on the provider’s business, families, and communities, starting her journey at the provider’s Browns Plains centre, taking on positions with the support office functions, and has now stepped into the leadership role at Yarrabilba.
She completed work experience at Sparrow Early Learning Browns Plains as part of her studies. Although she was enthusiastic about hospitality and aged care, it was her dream to work with children that led her to pursue a career in early childhood education.
Racheal’s time at Browns Plains was filled with many proud moments, from starting as a work experience student to becoming an Assistant Educator, Lead Educator, 2IC, and Educational Leader.
Her journey has been one of steady growth, during which she took on the role of Acting Service Manager, demonstrating her leadership skills and commitment to the service. Her personal connection to Browns Plains is equally special as all four of her children have attended the service, with her youngest son currently in the nursery.
After being offered a Traineeship position while at Browns Plains, Racheal completed her Cert III, followed by her Diploma in Early Childhood Education and Care. More recently she successfully obtained her Advanced Diploma in Community Sector Management.
Transitioning to Head Office
Accepting a maternity cover position at Sparrow’s National Support Office was a big step for Racheal, one that pushed her out of her comfort zone.
Motivated by her colleagues and husband, she embraced the challenge and joined the Sparrow Support Office team, gaining invaluable insights into the workings of the business and developed a deep understanding of the policies, procedures, and CCS processes that shape Sparrow Early Learning. Her work allowed her to see how different services operate, while also gaining a new perspective on the importance of deadlines, policy, and inter-departmental collaboration.
“While my time in the Support Office gave me insight into the bigger picture of early learning, my heart has always been with children,” Racheal explained, “where I can create environments where they feel safe, supported, and excited to learn.”
“I am passionate about building strong relationships with families and fostering a sense of community within my new service. I truly believe in providing children with the best start in life through high-quality education and care.”
Advice for Others Seeking Career Growth
When asked about advice for others considering similar opportunities, Racheal had this to say: “If you are ever given the opportunity to gain further experience, grow, and extend your knowledge, take it!”
