Rare opportunity to drive ECEC quality in South Australia

The Education Standards Board (ESB), which serves as South Australia’s Regulatory Authority, is seeking a new Chief Executive, representing a rare opportunity for a leader with vision to drive quality outcomes in the state.
Responsible for the registration and regulation of early childhood services, and registration of government and non-government schools for domestic and overseas students, the ESB has a broad range of functions and responsibilities, and is seeking a leader who can drive sector wide impact and stakeholder engagement.
The ESB ensures compliance with the National Quality Framework and associated legislation, and its roles include monitoring, assessing, and supporting providers to promote safety, quality, and developmental outcomes for children and young people from birth to age 18. Through its regulatory and advisory functions, the ESB fosters equitable, high-quality educational environments that prioritise health, well-being, and continuous improvement.
An exceptional leader is sought to drive change, champion regulation and ensure the highest standards of education and care in SA. The visionary Chief Executive (CE) will provide strategic leadership and operational oversight for the organisation.
This role involves three key statutory positions: Government Schools Registrar, Non-Government Schools Registrar, and Early Childhood Services Registrar, each with significant legislative responsibilities. Reporting to the Presiding Member and Board, the CE will drive the implementation of strategic priorities, operational excellence, and act as a proactive and contemporary regulator for the ESB.
Leading a dedicated team of 72, the incumbent will create a professional and supportive workplace, while ensuring the achievement of organisational goals. This pivotal role requires a leader who can balance regulatory precision with collaboration, innovation, political acumen, and effective stakeholder engagement across schools, early childhood services, government agencies, and industry bodies.
The right person for the role will have extensive experience in leading compliance or regulatory frameworks within a legislative context, a contemporary approach to leading and developing staff teams and exceptional stakeholder engagement skills.
The incoming CE will also have demonstrable executive leadership and strategic planning capabilities in complex organisational settings, paired with a strong commitment to quality assurance, continuous improvement, and professional integrity. A tertiary qualification relevant to the position is essential.
An opportunity for an exceptional leader to drive transformational change and elevate quality through championing regulation, ensuring the highest standards of education and care for every child and young person in South Australia.
