On the 22nd of June 2024, the New South Wales early childhood education and care (ECEC) sector gathered with the NSW Deputy Premier and NSW Minister for Education and Early Learning for the State of our Sector awards.

The awards recognise the contributions made by educators, academics and government representatives toward early childhood education, care and benefits within the early learning sector.

In an awards presentation dominated by academics and educators from early learning centres, Colleen Sanderson shone through as the only dedicated outside school hours care (OSHC) educator to be nominated.

Ms Sanderson, who works for Camp Australia at Yarrawarrah Public School, and recently celebrated her ten year anniversary with her employer, was noted for making the children in her care her top priority.

A qualified schoolteacher and having worked in OSHC for 35 years, she is highly regarded by all those around her. She values children’s voices, which shape every activity and menu. She teaches community and cultural respect, emphasizing diversity. She ensures all children have breakfast before school and communicates with teachers daily to exchange family information concerning children’s wellbeing.

When children display challenging behaviors, she engages with them respectfully, so they understand the impact of their behaviour. This transforms these challenging moments into opportunities for learning.

“I will treasure this nomination and never forget the kindness shown to me by Camp Australia,” Ms Sanderson said in her acceptance speech.

“The commitment to improving our OSHC industry (sic.), along with the hard work and care, is admirable. I believe this nomination belongs to everyone at Camp Australia.”

Camp Australia CEO Warren Jacobson nominated Colleen stating “she has guided the growth of over 350 children and supported hundreds of families to achieve their dreams by providing a safe environment where children can enjoy meaningful connections with other primary school-aged children and educators”.

Congratulating Ms Sanderson on her nomination ahead of the win Yarrawarrah Public School Principal Kyleigh Nash said Ms Sanderson’s commitment to the students and families at Yarrawarrah PS is “second to none.”

“Her calm and caring nature provides a sense of security and approachability for all stakeholders. I have had positive feedback from families about how much their children love attending before and after-school care because of the wonderful rapport Colleen has with the students, her creativity in delivering quality and fun programs, and the genuine care she shows both students and families.”
