Hobbit Preschool & Child Care Centre is a privately owned 35-place service operated by Learning Kids Family Day Care.

The service provides education and care for children aged between two and five years of age and is rated as Meeting the National Quality Standard.

The history of Hobbit Preschool & Child Care Centre

The service has been in operation since 1973, and was originally set up under the auspices of the University of New England (UNE) in response to a submission by parents who needed extended day care close to the University where they were working or studying.

A continuous link with the University has developed over the years through the attendance of children whose parents work or study at UNE. However, Hobbit also has a long tradition as a community-based Centre for the Armidale community, and welcomes children from a wide range of cultural backgrounds.

Hobbit became affiliated with the Armidale Ex-Services Memorial Club in 2009, and officially changed ownership in 2013.

What is the Hobbit Preschool & Child Care Centre vision and approach to learning?

Hobbit Preschool & Child Care Centre recognises that all children learn best through play, which involves exploration, creative expression, and cooperation.

The service aims to provide a play-based curriculum that promotes and develops the following areas:

  • Intellectual enrichment
  • Language enhancement
  • Social skills
  • Emotional stability and growth
  • Imagination
  • Fine and gross motor skills
  • Concepts, independence
  • Responsibility for self, others and the environment around us
  • An understanding of cultural differences and similarities and the role people can provide to the community or centre.

Are there any unique aspects to the Hobbit Preschool & Child Care Centre offer?

Hobbit Preschool & Child Care Centre aims to provide a balance between structured and unstructured learning experiences.

“We believe it is essential to provide opportunities and experiences that balance creativity, investigation, flexibility, and diversity within a familiar routine that is consistent and secure,” information from the website notes.

“This way the children are encouraged to make decisions and to experiment without fear of failure. The children will have the opportunity to be heard and listened to, freely expressing their needs, feelings, and opinions, thus developing confidence, self-esteem, and skills in seeking and receiving information.”
