City of Wanneroo approves $2.1m ECEC build despite criticism from locals
Perth council the City of Wanneroo has approved a $2.1 million early childhood education and care (ECEC) service despite the objection of more than 40 locals.
The 92 place service, to be built in the suburb of Madeley, was approved by the Metro Outer Joint Development Assessment Panel in December 2022, and will be built across two lots on Kingsway and King David Boulevard.
A public consultation period in September 2022 attracted 45 submissions, 43 of which were in objection to the development, and one of which included a petition with 78 signatures. The main concerns outlined in the submissions related to traffic congestion, a shortfall in parking, the impact of noise from the service on nearby residents, and an oversupply of existing ECEC services in the area.
Despite these objections, the City approved the development with only one councillor, Vinh Nguyen, voting against the plans.
“Whilst it is noted that a significant number of submitters identified traffic and parking-related issues as a cause for objection, the traffic impact study provided by the applicant demonstrates that the proposal is capable of operating safely without significantly impacting the operation of the existing road network,” a report prepared by the City said.
