Early childhood education and care (ECEC) services seeking to strengthen cultural responsiveness and deepen their commitment to reconciliation have a valuable planning tool at their fingertips, the Significant Dates and Events calendar from Australians Together.
This freely accessible online resource provides a thoughtfully curated list of key dates connected to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander histories, cultures and contributions. It’s designed to support educators and services in acknowledging significant moments throughout the year, both in practice and in conversation with children and families.More than just a calendar, the resource invites reflection and encourages action. It supports services to embed cultural awareness and recognition into daily routines, annual planning cycles and community events. Dates such as the Anniversary of the Apology (13 February), National Sorry Day (26 May), and NAIDOC Week are not only noted, but explained in a way that enables educators to engage meaningfully and confidently with their teams, children and communities.
For services implementing a Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP) or those simply looking to strengthen cultural safety and inclusion, the Significant Dates and Events resource provides a strong foundation for shared learning and intentional programming.
Importantly, the tool may support:
