Western Australia seeks expert advisers for new early intervention pilot
The Western Australian Government is calling for expert advisers to help shape a new early intervention initiative aimed at preventing children at risk from entering the youth justice system. The initiative, On Track to Thrive, represents an innovative step in supporting children aged 5 to 9 years and their families through integrated, culturally informed approaches.
The pilot program is designed to identify early risk indicators and provide co‑ordinated support before issues escalate to youth justice involvement. It seeks to harness expert insight to ensure responses are trauma‑informed, culturally responsive and community‑engaged.
To guide this work, the Department of Justice is assembling an Expert Reference Group (ERG). This non‑statutory committee will advise on best practice, help refine referral pathways, and oversee program development. Members will play a central role in assessing eligibility and suggesting enhancements to service responses.
The department is particularly encouraging applications from people with:
- expertise in child development, health and wellbeing, psychology, education and social work
- experience working with Aboriginal and culturally diverse communities
- strong connections to the pilot locations in Armadale and Geraldton in Western Australia.
Early intervention is widely recognised as a critical strategy to improve long‑term outcomes for children and families, reducing the likelihood of later involvement in justice systems while fostering wellbeing and social inclusion. Investing in tailored, community‑anchored support aligns with broader evidence on the importance of prevention‑oriented policies for child and family systems.
Expressions of interest to join the Expert Reference Group are open until 16 January 2026.
Interested professionals and community leaders are invited to apply via the WA Government portal.
