NSW Police legacy child safety handbook: A vital resource for educators and families
The 2025 edition of the NSW Police Legacy Child Safety Handbook is available, offering current guidance on safety and wellbeing for children across homes, services and communities.
The Child Safety Handbook is a trusted resource designed to support families, educators, and child-related professionals in navigating the evolving challenges of child safety, including personal safety, cyber awareness, mental health and emergency preparedness.
Produced by NSW Police Legacy in partnership with community and corporate sponsors, the handbook provides up-to-date, practical advice aligned with key safety priorities. Topics covered include online safety, protective behaviours, water and road safety, mental health, bullying, and guidance for responding to emergencies and natural disasters.
The resource is especially relevant to early childhood education and care (ECEC) professionals, playing a critical role in creating safe and supportive learning environments. As outlined in the National Quality Standard, particularly Quality Area 2 children’s health and safety is a foundational priority, requiring educators to be proactive and informed in their practices.
In addition to being a helpful tool for parent engagement, the handbook also supports compliance with the Education and Care Services National Regulations, which mandate ongoing safety education and risk management strategies in early learning settings.
To support educators in integrating the handbook’s content into their programs, it can be used to inform safety discussions with children and families, inspire child-safe learning experiences, and assist in reviewing or enhancing current policies and procedures.
