Celebrating connection and community at Eden Academy Edens Landing

by Fiona Alston

October 30, 2025

In celebration of Loud Shirt Day, the team and families at Eden Academy’s Edens Landing centre joined forces to raise funds for Hear and Say, the not‑for‑profit organisation that supports children with hearing loss. What began as a modest goal of raising $500 grew into something much bigger; the community raised an incredible $2,238.

The cause is particularly close to the centre’s heart, with two children, Cartia and Kaiyah, both receiving life-changing support from Hear and Say. Cartia is now thriving in the Pre‑Kindy room and her story inspired the team to participate and they soon learned of another child, Kaiyah, whose journey has touched many.

Kaiyah was just six weeks old when she was diagnosed with permanent moderate-to-moderately severe bilateral sensorineural hearing loss after failing her newborn hearing screening three times. Her parents were told it was likely just fluid from a quick delivery, and the audiologist visit was simply precautionary. But the news came as a shock, and what followed was an overwhelming series of tests and appointments. At 10 weeks, Kaiyah was fitted with hearing aids and referred to Queensland Children’s Hospital audiology services.

By four months old, she began receiving support from Hear and Say and continues to attend monthly sessions. Now over two and a half years old, she’s thriving, confidently wearing her hearing aids and progressing beautifully. Her story, alongside Cartia’s, motivated the entire centre community to embrace Loud Shirt Day and rally around the cause.

From cheering for Cartia as she arrived in her bright shirt to embedding the message of inclusion into programming, the day was full of warmth, colour, and connection. The centre’s celebration reflected the EYLF’s principles of belonging, being, and becoming — making this much more than a fundraiser. It was a real-time example of early learning in action, underpinned by community and purpose.

The Sector sat down with Eden Academy Edens Landing Centre Director Kelly Campbell to learn more about the centre’s heartfelt participation in Loud Shirt Day, and the powerful community spirit behind their fundraising success.

Fiona: What made you want to take part in Loud Shirt Day this year?

Kelly: Cartia has been a part of Eden Academy, starting at our Woodridge service and now at Edens Landing. Our events calendar reflects our community, so raising money and awareness for a cause that resonates with us was a driver. After sharing Cartia’s story we came to know Kaiyah’s story too. Learning that Hear and Say supports her, and our friend Parker validated us getting involved for Loud Shirt Day.

Fiona: What was the vibe like at the centre on the day? Any favourite or funny moments that stood out?

Kelly: The vibe was fun!! The program in all rooms reflected the cause, team members and children were dressed in bright clothes. When Cartia arrived her group cheered for her which was the cutest thing ever!

Fiona: How did you rally the families and team to get involved?

Kelly: We sent out communications to families and displayed signage throughout the centre.

Fiona: Did you expect to raise such a large amount? What was the reaction when you saw the final total?

Kelly: No, I thought that $500 may have been too high but it was a goal we were definitely aiming for.

Fiona: What do you think this day meant to the children, both those directly impacted and the wider centre group?

Kelly: It means inclusion, connection and community. This day highlights awareness; however inclusion is embedded in our program through experiences and conversations. We want our children to be out in the community and recognise that not everyone is the same, and it’s okay to ask questions and be inquisitive.

Fiona: Was there a moment that gave you goosebumps or made you feel particularly proud of your community?

Kelly: Seeing our first donation of $150 from one of our Pre‑Kindy families, and all the children cheering as Cartia walked in.

Fiona: What would you say to another centre thinking of getting involved in something like this?

Kelly: There are so many awareness days to get behind. When it’s something that impacts those around you, it makes the effort so worthwhile. Raising funds and awareness is just what organisations like Hear and Say need. We will continue to rally behind organisations and support where we can. It’s such a great feeling.

Fiona: Is there anything else you’d love people to know about the day, your community, or the impact you’re hoping this support will have?

Kelly: Just the benefits of collaboration and connection and giving. It creates a sense of shared purpose and pride in supporting something meaningful together.

The vibrant celebration at Eden Academy’s Edens Landing not only raised vital funds for Hear and Say but also exemplified the power of inclusive, community-driven early education. With a strong sense of belonging, connection, and purpose, the centre’s Loud Shirt Day was a colourful reminder of how small actions can make a big difference.
