ELLA celebrates 10 years of language learning in early childhood

The Early Learning Languages Australia (ELLA) program is celebrating 10 years of introducing young children to new languages through digital learning, play and cultural exploration.
Since its launch in 2014, ELLA has supported more than 500,000 children across 6,000 early learning services nationwide to explore up to 13 languages, including Arabic, Mandarin, Japanese, Italian, French, Hindi and several Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander languages.
The program uses play-based apps and educator resources to help children build confidence, curiosity and awareness of different cultures during their early learning years.
The program forms part of a $34.6 million Australian Government investment in the Teacher Resource Hubs from 2025 to 2029, delivering curriculum-aligned, evidence-based resources for educators and families.
Educators report that ELLA supports communication, literacy and inclusion, helping children see language as a bridge between communities and cultures.
As ELLA marks its 10th anniversary, the Department of Education is exploring how digital innovation and cultural partnerships can continue to expand the program’s reach, including greater access for regional and remote communities.
The milestone recognises the educators, families and developers who have contributed to the success of ELLA over the past decade.
